We are a new generation of scientists and engineers who want to build a sustainable future through innovative, creative, science-based solutions. Will you join us?
The scale of the challenge is daunting. Scientists have recently said that to prevent dangerous climate change, we can use only 20-30 percent of all coal, oil and gas reserves up to 2050. With current rates of use, that carbon budget will run out in ten years. At the same time, there are people are living without access to electricity, enough food, clean water, or decent health care. Creating a prosperous and sustainable future for all requires new approaches and new thinking, working holistically both across and beyond the sciences, working collaboratively, asking questions, and continually learning. But finding other people who share the same passions, earning the right knowledge, and building the confidence to forge new paths can be challenging.
This is why we launched the Network of Early-career Sustainable Scientists and Engineers (NESSE). We are building a community that exchanges knowledge and resources across disciplines, collaborates around global challenges, shares inspiring innovations, and connects the dots with broader sustainability movements.
2014 was the year we came together, shared our energy and enthusiasm for a common vision, and decided to walk together along this path. Today we’re launching our vision and strategy for the coming year. We have so many ideas and plans, but to give you a taster, in 2015 we will:
- Build community and share ideas through a new interactive website enabling you to make connections, learn, post stories and build your local sustainable science community
- Enable sustainable research and education by collating resources and interdisciplinary communities around global challenges in the areas of energy, health, water, food and transport
- Train leaders through events at international conferences in France, the US, UK and Brazil (come and meet us there!) and our mentorship programme
We can’t do this without you! There are loads of ways to get involved. First step – find out what’s happening via Twitter and Facebook, then join our ranks (for free!) as an official member to let us know how you’d like to get involved.
We look forward to sharing this exciting journey with you, and invite you to read our 2015 strategic plan here: NESSE Overview of Vision and Strategic Activities 2015.
